“Lowery attended high school in Rogersville and Missouri State for undergraduate studies before moving to New York to earn a master’s degree at the School of Visual Arts. He returned to the Ozarks to teach at Drury but still exhibits all over the world.

“It’s important for students to see that you can be based here or from here and do things out in the world, not just nationally, but internationally as well,” Lowery said.

He said he often hears students voice limiting beliefs about what they can accomplish as small-town Missouri kids.

“They’ll say, ‘Well, I’m just from here, maybe this is all I can do,’” Lowery said. “Well, you can do a lot.”

But, he said, you do need to use the creativity, ingenuity, and courage it took to attend art school and apply it beyond graduation day.

“There are so many people working with careers in the visual arts,” Lowery said, “But just like the creative individuals themselves, the paths to successful careers are not necessarily pre-existing.”
